Swire Shipping’s vision is to be the leading provider of safe, sustainable, innovative supply chain solutions and our customers’ partner of choice.

Swire Shipping is committed to having a positive impact on all the communities and the environment that we impact. We are passionate about decarbonisation, optimising energy efficiency and protecting and, where viable, enhancing the biodiversity of the environment.

Over the years, we have made significant progress towards environmental sustainability by adopting a proactive approach towards sustainable shipping, expanding our fuel-efficient fleet and implementing a number of operational initiatives.

What is Sail Greener?

The aim of Sail Greener is to offer our customers an opportunity to offset the carbon footprint of their shipment by contributing to projects that reduce or prevent carbon emissions, as well as build capacity and promote the economy of the local communities. This results in a carbon-neutral shipment.

The attributable monetary contributions go directly to fund third-party validated projects that help to offset the carbon emissions generated through shipping. Swire Shipping does not profit from the offset transaction.

All of the projects we offer are Verra certified for CO2 environmental benefits, combined with CCBA certified for economic and social benefits to the local communities.

About CO2 Emission Calculation

For every tonne of fuel, approximately 3.1144-3.206 tonnes of carbon dioxide (depending on the type of fuel used) are released into the atmosphere. To be aligned with the rest of the shipping industry, we use conversion factors from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

The total amount of carbon dioxide emitted for each shipment depends on factors such as the type of fuel used, number of ports called, distance travelled, weather conditions, vessel cargo capacity.
For our calculation methods, we use a historic 6-month data from vessels that are operated by Swire Shipping. We then take a median of the fuel consumed between each port pair within the same service.
As the vessels in Swire Shipping fleet carries both breakbulk and containers, we use tonnes of cargo for calculation where we assume 1 TEU is equal to 23 tonnes.

We use the formula as outlined in IMO’s Guidelines for Voluntary Use of the Ship Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI).

We can only calculate carbon footprint for shipments carried on a Swire Shipping operated vessel. We cannot calculate carbon emissions if part(s) of the journey is/are performed by a third-party vessel(s). This is due to carbon emission calculations being based on a historic 6-month data which is only available for our operated vessels.

Carbon offsetting is an effective mean of funding carbon reduction on the ground to compensate for emissions associated with your shipment. Swire Shipping will engage the services of a carbon broker that trades credits in the voluntary emissions market. All the projects from which we chose to buy credits have Verra certified CO2 environmental benefits, combined with CCBA certified economic and social benefits to the local communities.
