Where it all began

We started out as The China Navigation Company (CNCo) on the banks of the Yangtze River in 1872 where we operated a modest fleet of Mississippi-style paddle steamers. Swire Shipping was then the brand name for all liner shipping services operated by CNCo.

Over the years, the Swire Shipping brand has become synonymous with being a leader in providing sustainable liner shipping services in the Asia-Pacific markets. In October 2021, CNCo was renamed Swire Shipping Pte. Ltd. as part of a wider exercise to streamline the two brand identities into a single brand, building on Swire Shipping’s well-established name.

The CNCo name is an important part of our heritage and remains the name of our holding company in the United Kingdom where we are called The China Navigation Company Ltd.

Celebrating 150 Years

2022 marks an important milestone for Swire Shipping. To commemorate this special occasion, we have have lined up a series of exciting activities for both our staff and customers. As we celebrate 150 years of enriching lives through connecting our customers and communities, we are also forging ahead to be Fit For the Future.

The China Navigation Company Crest And Name

CNCo’s crest features the Swire family’s motto – Esse Quam Videri – which has been used since the 18th century. Translated as ‘To be rather than to seem to be’, it means we are what we say we are, we do what we say we do. This ethos has underpinned our endeavours, and continues to do so today.

We have adopted the CNCo crest at the core of our anniversary logo. It is a reminder for us to remember our roots and take pride in our heritage so that we continue to forge a purposeful future.
