Singapore Office Opening

Singapore Office Opening

07/03/2022

Swire Shipping is a valued partner of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA); we have common goals to decarbonise and develop maritime talent; the MPA is looking to deepen their already strong ties with Swire. These were some of the points highlighted by Quah Ley Hoon, the Chief Executive Officer of MPA; our Guest of Honour at the official opening of the Singapore office earlier this week.

Ms Quah was among the 10 external guests who joined us at this joyous occasion. Colleagues all over the world joined the livestream of the event, which was also graced by Sam Swire, our Chairman.

And with the sounding of the bell by James at the entrance, the ceremony begins!

And we are open for business!

Acknowledging the hard work of everyone – and in particular – our seafarers in delivering “an exceptional year” for the Company last year, our Chairman Sam Swire noted that despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, everyone has adapted well. The outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, noted Sam, is of grave concern; given the large number of Ukrainian colleagues we have. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our Ukrainian colleagues and their families during this difficult time,” he said.

Going forward, said Sam, decarbonisation is an area that the Company is keen to be on the front foot. Last year, we announced our commitment to reducing our GHG footprint, ultimately to net zero by, and preferably well before, 2050. Swire Shipping serves many communities in the Pacific which are directly impacted by global warming and with many communities at risk of disappearing, we must take action to drive change. In October 2021, John Swire & Sons Limited, our ultimate parent company, and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping signed a partnership agreement, committing to a long-term strategic collaboration around the development of safe and sustainable decarbonisation solutions for the maritime industry.

With sustainability taking centre stage in everything we do, the Singapore office was renovated with sustainable features in mind. Materials were sourced sustainably and office equipment was re-used where possible. “We hope that the new amenities will provide colleagues with a great place to work and collaborate in,” said James.
